Highlights of This Year’s Event

The Uozu Festival begins with beautiful floats from Suwa Shrine at the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Tatemon Festival (Aug. 1st-2nd), which is followed by the traditional folk song and dance with over 650 years of history: the Serikomi Choroku Odori Street Dance (Aug. 3rd), and also the fireworks display above the sea (Aug. 2nd).
The event “Candle Road,” where the route towards the Tatemon Festival venue is lit with candles, will be held again this year at the same time.
Also, this year marks the seventh time for the UO!JAZZ festival to be held (Aug. 2nd). The UO!JAZZ is a music event featuring both domestic and international artists that are sure to bring great-sounding music.
At the Roadside Station Shinkiro venue, you can find delicious local gourmet foods and food trucks, so please enjoy the Uozu Festival while you fill your belly (Aug. 2nd only).

The various event locations are as follows: Suwa Shrine for the Tatemon Festival, Uozu Station Main Street for the Serikomi Choroku Odori, Uozu Port for the Fireworks Display Above the Sea, Roadside Station Shinkiro for UO!JAZZ, and Esashi Park, nearby shrines and temples, Chuo Street, etc., for Candle Road.
Furthermore, the Kyoden Tanabata Festival, held every year on Aug. 7th, will once again be held this year in the Kyoden District. See the beautiful flow of lanterns floating across the sea and the charming nostalgic Japanese scenery.
We hope you will enjoy the Uozu Festival again this year.

The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity “Tatemon Festival” is a festival at the Suwa Shrine that is dedicated to the ocean gods

Tatemon Festival (Festival Procession)

The event will be held at 20:30 over two days on Fri, Aug. 2nd and Sat, Aug. 3rd! The Tatemon Festival is held at the “fisherman’s shrine,” Suwa Shrine and is a way to pray for safety and big catches of fish at sea. In 2016, the Tatemon Festival became registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and it is one of the main events of the Uozu Festival. The long pillars, that are roughly 15-16 m long, have many paper lanterns attached to them that leave a beautiful trail of light in the summer night sky. Watching the shrine parishioners move the Tatemon around you makes you realize why this is truly Uozu’s proud summer tradition. The Tatemon Festival decorates the end of both days of the festival!

① Paid Viewing Seats for the Tatemono Festival (Limited to 40 Seats)

We will publish the festival information on our website to guide customers for reservations.
The Tate-Mon Matsuri, registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, features rare wheelless floats in Japan. Seven boat-shaped lanterns, each approximately 16 meters tall and weighing 5 tons, illuminate the summer night sky, and the festival is characterized by the fact that they are pulled by about 80 people using only human power.
The history of the Tate-Mon Matsuri dates back about 300 years, and it is said to have originated from the fervent wishes of the local community for abundant fish catches and safe maritime conditions.

We will provide paid seating within the grounds of Suwa Shrine, where the most exciting part of the Tate-Mon Matsuri, the “Rotating Dedication,” takes place. The seats will consist of simple folding chairs.
As this area is normally off-limits to the public, only those who purchase a paid seat will be able to enjoy this special view. Additionally, there are temporary toilets and public restrooms located close to the venue (about a 3-minute walk).
